Some Hints/Advice:
Space battles are hard to do in rp, because both players have to be on top of their game. The limits are there so that the fleets make sense and can be kept track of as you fight. Ship to ship fighting will ALWAYS entail casualties in any confrontation, it is unavoidable. Size of your fleet wont matter as much as how you use them. A capitol ship is bristling with fire power and can only be taken out by the heavy firpower of the battle ships. However battleships are slow and attacking the capitol ship right away would be costly.
Pick at your enemies forces until they are defenseless or run. Troop transports can be used to board enemy ships, and then smaller fights can ensue within ships hulls to destroy it. Sacrifice the marines or find a way to save them, your choice. Cruisers are faster and can outrun battleships but cant quite match the firepower. But Cruisers can whittle away at fighters/bombers, while battleships cannot fire on them for lack of anti small aircraft weapons.
Fighters and bombers do well against Battleships, who lack the weapons to attack them while cruisers with their precision weapons can whittle away entire squadrons before they get close to them. Because of the use of smaller weaponry there was less space for the cruisers to have larger weaponry, meaning they cant match a battleship in firepower. Fighters are faster and more nimble than bombers, and can be used to escort troop transports as well.
All in all, to be an admiral you have to have an understanding for strategy and how fleets work. Outmaneuver your enemy to the best of your ability then when you are victorious reurn to your faction's home planet to refill your ranks. Admirals can even combine their fleets to become even more deadly.
